WING SHU CHAN
Traditional memorial set
Family members of the late Wing Shu Chan will get together later this month to celebrate his life and mark the end of the mourning period with a traditional Chinese gathering called “Ying Hung.”
Mr. Chan, who was 81, died June 28 at the Lucas Valley home of his eldest daughter, Jean B. Chan. His wife, six daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren were by his side when he died.
Ying Hung day, which has been set for July 30, will begin with a visit to Mr. Chan’s grave at Hoy Sun Memorial Cemetery in Colma. Participants will return to Jean Chan’s home, where sweet dim sum, roast chicken and pork, fruits, candies and “lucky” money in red envelopes will be shared among relatives.
Mourning clothes will be replaced by colorful attire in keeping with Chinese tradition.
Mr. Chan did his undergraduate work in literature and graduate study in education at Sun Yat Sen University in China. He held several posts in education and in the Chinese government.
In 1956, Mr. Chan emigrated from China to the United States with his wife and daughters.
In the United States, Mr. Chan was appointed overseas representative to Taiwan, was on the faculty of the Chicago Chinese Language School, was president of the National Chinese Welfare Council and was president of the North American Gee How Oak Tin Association, which represents Chinese people with the surnames Chan, Woo and Yuen.
He was the editor of the China Times of Chicago for eight years, retiring in 1978.
After he became ill, Mr. Chan and his wife, Chi Sun Chan, moved from Florida to stay with his daughter in Lucas Valley. Besides his widow and daughter Jean, Mr. Chan is survived by daughters Joan Chan of Princeton, N.J., Anna Chan of Miami, Fla., Eva Chan of Ridgefield, Conn., Daisy Chan of Stockton and Patty Chan of Los Angeles, and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sonoma State University Academic Foundation (earmarked for the Wing Shu Chan Family Scholarship to benefit students pursuing the teaching profession), Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, 94928.
