A 21
Walter Francis Freitas, attorney, Marin native
Chronicle Staff Report
A memorial service will be held today for Walter Francis Freitas, a retired attorney and Marin County native who died Sunday of lung failure at his Pebble Beach home. He was 90.
The youngest of Marin County pioneer Manuel T. Freitas' nine children, Mr. Freitas was orphaned at an early age and raised by his older siblings at the family's ranch in San Rafael.
A graduate of Hastings College of Law, he shared a law practice in San Rafael with his brother, Carlos Freitas, for 25 years.
Mr. Freitas also served as California's state inheritance tax appraiser in the 1940s and 1950s.
In 1941, he was nearly blinded when another hunter accidentally shot him in the face. The injury kept him off the front lines during World War II, but he served in the Office of Army Ordinance.
Mr. Freitas had five children with his first wife, Marno Prince Freitas, whom he married in 1932. She, with three of his children, preceded him in death.
In the 1950s, Mr. Freitas and his brother Louis Freitas took over dairy operations at the family's "C" Ranch in Novato and later helped develop the land into the San Marin community.
Before retiring in 1973, he also helped Joseph Eichler and John Kenny develop Terra Linda.
Mr. Freitas is survived by his wife of 22 years, Beverly King Sweet Freitas of Pebble Beach; a daughter, Carol Freitas of Redding; a son, David Freitas of San Rafael; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today at St. Isabella's Catholic Church, 1 Trinity Way, San Rafael. The family asks memorial contributions be made to the Freitas Foundation, 874 Fourth St., San Rafael CA 94901.
