John Hyde, 38, of Stinson Dies
By Ivan Gale
Stinson Beach resident John S. Hyde, a hardwood floor installation expert, passed away Sept. 2 in San Francisco. Mr. Hyde died of a heart attack on the shores of Baker Beach. He was 38.
Life was his daughter
Mr. Hyde, who knew Stinson Beach as home, is remembered as a "kind soul and wonderful dad" said Sarah Atherton, whose daughter Micheala went to pre-school with his daughter Jesse, 5.
"He was very gentle [and] his life was his daughter or his work," Atherton said of Mr. Hyde, who was estranged from his wife and had full custody of Jesse.
Echoed life-long friend and former girlfriend Lisa Lucchesi, "he told me two weeks ago, that his daughter was his heart."
Mr. Hyde was born in Pueblo, Colorado, but relocated to San Rafael with his family when he was in the 8th grade. After graduating from San Rafael High School, he studied at La Barenne culinary academy in Paris.
Upon completing his culinary studies, Mr. Hyde took time to travel throughout Europe, visiting countries like Greece, France, Holland and Italy. "He loved to travel," remembered Lucchesi, who lived and traveled with Mr. Hyde in Europe. Recently, she said, Mr. Hyde had visited Brazil with his father.
After working as a chef in upstate New York, Mr. Hyde returned to Marin. Though taking a brief stint as a pastry chef, he moved his professional focus towards the wood-working crafts, and opened his own hardwood floor business.
Lucchesi said that despite his love for travel, Mr. Hyde always returned to Stinson Beach. "He loved living on the beach and taking walks," she said.
A great son
He was also a great son, said Lucchesi, close and in close proximity, Mr. Hyde lived in an apartment with his daughter adjacent to his parent’s residence in Stinson Beach.
Mr. Hyde is survived by his mother and father, Margaret and John B. Hyde, of Stinson Beach; daughter, Jesse Hyde, of Stinson Beach; his estranged wife, Christine Hyde, of Sausalito; sister and brother-in-law, Mary "Pooh" King and Ron King, of Novato.; nieces and nephews Ronni, Hydee, Mary, and Henry King of Novato; aunt, Ethelyn Potestio of Pueblo, Colorado; and cousins, Mary and Mindy, of Pueblo, Colorado.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, on the beach in front of the Hyde family home at 98 Calle Del Ribera in Stinson Beach.
The family has suggested that any memorial contributions be made to Alcoholics Anonymous.
