GEORGE DORFMAN

Funeral for George Dorfman of San Francisco, father of Alexandra D. Selby of San Rafael, was held today at Sinai memorial Chapel, San Francisco. Entombment was at Portals of Eternity.

Dorfman, 69, died Tuesday in a San Francisco hospital after an illness.

Born in Kishenev, Russia, he fled with his family to Bucharest, Romania during the pogroms before World War I, then escaped the Nazis at t he beginning of World War II and fled back to Russia. When he returned to his homeland, however, he was immediately sent to a forced labor camp in Soviet manganese mines.

After the war, he managed to reach Israel, but was detained four times on the way by the British in their camps on Cyprus. After his fourth escape from a British camp, he worked for nine years as a construction foreman for the Israeli Army.

A widower, he came to San Francisco in 1957, where he worked for the past 12 years as assistant to the executive director of Temple Sherith Isreal.

He also is survived by two grandchildren and a brother, Arnold of Bucharest.
