Zalmon H. Garfield, Ph.D.

Lover of life and friend of those in need, died of congestive heart failure at Marin General Hospital in Kentfield, California at the age of 83 on August 3, 2002. Dr. Garfield was born in Norfolk, Virginia on February 14, 1919. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1932 when only thirteen years old. A graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia in 1936, he served as editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper and excelled in debating. He went on to receive his degree in journalism from Washington and Lee in Lexington, Virginia in 1939, where he joined Phi Eta Sigma Fraternity in 1937 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1939. In 1940, he earned a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. Dr. Garfield began work for the City News Bureau in Chicago and later became an editor on the Chicago Defender. He was active in progressive politics in Cook County and director of the presidential campaign for former Vice-President in the FDR administration, Henry Wallace. He received an appointment as Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and spent almost four years in active duty during World War II in the Pacific on the ship Crescent City where he was deck and communication officer. He volunteered for a special mission aboard a submarine in the Guadalcanal area. Later, he served as gunnery officer on the ship Winged Arrow. At the time of his honorable discharge, he had reached the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade. After discharge from the Navy, Dr.Garfield returned to political activism in Chicago, followed by work in progressive politics in Pennsylvania. At Jerrold Electronics, the original television cable system, where he worked from 1949, he became President of the firm at the age of 39, qualifying for membership in the Young President's Association. He retired from the company in 1962, while continuing as a business consultant. Dr. Garfield began another career after receiving both a Master of Arts degree in 1964 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1968 from Temple University in Philadelphia. He worked at Eagleville, Pennsylvania as a therapist in the drug and alcohol abuse treatment program. He was also acting director of Horizon House in Philadelphia. Then Dr. Garfield entered mainstream politics, running the Pennsylvania gubernatorial campaign for Milton J. Shapp who was elected in 1970. Dr. Garfield served as the Executive Assistant to the Governor, later run Shapp's successful second campaign, and continued as Special Consultant to the Governor throughout his administration. From 1971 to 1972, Dr. Garfield worked for Harmon International in Europe. He and his wife Patricia moved to London and for several months traveled extensively around the world as the Honorary Pennsylvania Ambassador. Returning to the States, he became regional director of the National Institute of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse from 1972 to 1973. From 1975 to 1976, Dr. Garfield was Dean of the San Francisco Campus of the California School of Professional Psychology. This vivacious and versatile man enjoyed tennis, squash, opera, theater, and literature. He was a supporter of numerous charitable causes. A psychotherapist in private practice from 1976 until his death, Dr. Garfield's strength of character, wisdom, and compassion is missed by all who knew him. Survivors include Patricia, his loving spouse for thirty-three years, and their four children, Lynda Malavanya, Steven Garfield, Wendy Garfield Burger, and Cheryl Kaufman. Other survivors include his older brother Morton Garfield, former wife Marjorie Garfield, 8 grandchildren: Ryan and Madison Burger, Joey and Sean Garfield, Nicholas Kaufman, Ben Summer, Micah Noe, Danielle Shelley, and great granddaughter Michaela. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 10th at the Alta Mira Hotel in Sausalito, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zalmon H. Garfield Memorial Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
