GRANT, Mr. Luis F - Died peacefully in his sleep, with his family, November 15, 2002, at home in San Rafael, at 92 years of age. He was articulate, thoughtful, and engaging. Luis was a quiet man who could express himself forcefully. He was devoted to family, and his many friends. He loved the opera, travel, and the reading of fine literature. He was born December 21, 1909, on the family ranch in Mountain View, in the foothills of Santa Clara County, to Theodore F. Grant and Isabel Kelly Grant. Family roots on his fathers side trace back to the Boston Tea party, and on his mother's side to English import/exporters that married into a privileged Mexican family in Mazatlan. His grandfather sailed to California through the straights of Magellan, and his great uncle crossed the Ismus of Panama in 1850. They established the family ranch in Mountain View in 1853. He attended a one room school house on the adjoining property started by his family. As a boy he was a devoted helper for his invalid mother. He graduated from San Jose State with a degree in Journalism, and was a reporter for the San Jose Harrold News. He served with the Coast Guard in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war he was a reporter for the Sacramento Bee. He then worked as a sales representative for the Southern Pacific Railroad: He enjoyed visiting his clients and traveling throughout Northern California and Nevada. He retired from SP and opened an antique shop in San Francisco that he had for many years. He loved the Opera, was a season ticket holder, and attended performances even this last year. He had a flat in London for six years, living there May to September, relishing the people, the English country side, and the Arts. He was an honored guest at the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve at the July 1996 dedication of a restored cabin of the original Grant Ranch. Luis provided an account of the pioneer life at this site: the history of loading hay into the barn that is still standing, the orchard work, the hired hand's cabin, apple shed, and grain fields. Much of the original Grant Ranch is part of this Preserve, and is a demonstration farm for area school children. Two years ago he moved to San Rafael to take care of his younger sister. He is greatly loved, and will be greatly missed by his sister, Virginia Murphy, nephews Steven Hauge of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Robert Hauge of Sebastopol, and by his many close friends in England, Hawaii, Palm Springs, San Francisco, and around the world. He was buried November 30th in the family plot at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name to your favorite charity, or Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Ave., Corte Madera, CA 94925.
