Elmo Rossi
Postal Service official

Elmo Anthony Rossi, a San Rafael native and U.S. Postal Service supervisor who began his career walking a mail route in his hometown, died Thursday, April 18, 1991, while on a visit to Palm Springs. He was 72.

After World War II service in the Army, Mr. Rossi took a job in 1946 delivering mail for the Postal Service, hiking three or four miles a day through downtown San Rafael with a mail sack that weighed about 30 pounds.

“It was a real good job,” Mr. Rossi said during a 1976 newspaper interview. “We got six bits an hour then.”

Mr. Rossi retired in 1976 as the supervisor of the Mission Branch post office on D Street in San Rafael. A vigorous worker, he retired with 2,576 hours of unused sick leave.

Mr. Rossi enjoyed travel, golf, bingo, blackjack and bowling. He was a member of Club Italia, San Rafael Sons In Retirement No. 22 and the Goldenaires, of which he was also past president.

Mr. Rossi is survived by his wife, Anne Rossi of San Rafael; a son, Robert Rossi of Menlo Park; a brother, Raymond Rossi of San Rafael; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Mount Tamalpais Chapel, 2500 Fifth Ave., San Rafael.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Tuesday at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael with entombment to follow at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

A Death Notice in the same paper says he was the grandfather of Andrew and Rachel Rossi of Menlo Park, and uncle of Alan Rossi of San Rafael and Janet Graham of San Anselmo.
