Edith Mewhirter Hawley
Passed away peacefully on December 8, 2002, at The Tamalpais, Greenbrae, CA. Edith was the wife of Edwin Hawley and sister of Leila Hawley, both of whom passed away a number of years ago. Edith lived in Marin County for over fifty years, residing in Sausalito for the majority of that time. Edith was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on August 18, 1908, and spent her early years there. She and her sister moved to San Francisco in the mid 1930's. At the outset of World War II Kenneth Bechtel asked Edith to join him as his Executive Assistant as he was creating Marinship in Sausalito. As Marinship grew into one of the most vital wartime shipyards on the West Coast, Edith was at the center of its activities. She enjoyed meeting dignitaries ranging from King Saud of Saudi Arabia to Bing Crosby as they visited Marinship in support of our war efforts. After the end of the war she remained in Kenneth Bechtel's office at Industrial Indemnity Company until her retirement. Edith was a lifelong traveler. She recalled with special enjoyment an airplane trip around the world in the mid-1950's, taken before jets shortened distances. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends at The Tamalpais. At Edith's request, no services will be held. She prefers that memorial donations be made in her name to your favorite charity.
