City Pays Tribute to Memory of Police Lieut. Manuel Soares

San Rafael was saddened last Monday by news of the death of Police Lieut. Manuel E. Soares, veteran police officer, whose long and conscientious service to the city has earned him a high place in the esteem of the people of Marin County.

His service began under the former Chief, Sabin Kane. Continuing through later administrations he advanced in rank to lieutenant and assistant chief.

Failing health for several weeks past ended in hospitalization the day before the end came.

A motorcycle accident about ten years ago, from which he apparently did not fully recover, brought on a recurring heart ailment which ended his life.

A native of San Rafael, aged 53 years, he was a son of Mrs. Frances Streckfus. Also surviving are his widow, Mrs. Jane Soares, two daughters, Mrs. Elane (sic) Howell and Mrs. Beatrice Drummond; a sister, Mrs. May Foster, and three brothers, Robert, George and John Streckfus.

He was a member of Tamalpais Parlor, N.S.G.W., San Rafael Lodge, B.P.O.E.; the Fraternal Order of Eagles; Young Men’s Institute; Marin Rod and Gun Club; Marin County Peace Officers Association, and the Painter’s Union, which vocation he followed in his earlier life.

Funeral services were held this morning (Thursday) from the Keaton Mortuary, thence to St. Raphael’s Church, and were attended by representatives of the various departments of the city government and hundreds of friends of the bereaved family. Interment took place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
