Helen K. Van Otteren, Beloved Mother and Wife
Helen Van Otteren passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, December 5, 2002 with her loving husband and children at her side. Helen was born on Monday, September 8, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan to Margarete and Walter Billany. She was 83 years old. Helen was a graduate of Northern High School in Detroit, Michigan. She swam at the Detroit Yacht Club and held a gold metal for the Breaststroke, State of Michigan in 1937 and 1938. Helen married Wilbur "Bud" Martin Van Otteren June 7th, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. During her life Helen held several jobs, but she was most proud of being a mother, raising her children and being co-owner of her husband's pneumatic tube manufacturing business. Her husband of 63 years, Bud, her son Thomas (Grace Valenti) Van Otteren and her daughter Juliet (Iain McGarvie-Munn) Van Otteren survive Helen. She will also be greatly missed by her granddaughter Raina Van Otteren and Helen's brother Robert Billing. A Celebration of Helen's Life was held at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary. Private Inurnment was at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. Funeral assistance provided by Mount Tamalpais Mortuary & Cemetery, 2500 5th Avenue, San Rafael, CA 415-459-2500.
