William S. Tevis Jr.

A funeral was held today for William S. Tevis Jr. of San Francisco, an internationally known polo player whose family once owned vast land holdings in Marin, including the 2,500-acre Ranch of the Lakes on the coast between Bolinas and Olema.

Tevis, 88, a descendant of one of California’s oldest and wealthiest families and a native San Franciscan, died Friday in a San Francisco hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was the son of Mabel Pacheco, who was daughter of Romauldo Pacheco, 12th governor of California. His paternal grandfather, Lloyd Tevis, was one of the founders of the Pony Express and of the Kern County Land Co.

Polo was the dominant interest of Tevis’ life and he was known as “Mr. Polo” and “The Iron Man of California” because of his prowess on the playing fields.

He played around the world and collected countless trophies and awards in a career which spanned more than half a century. He captained teams from many countries and was one of the most active proponents in keeping the sport alive in California.

In his later years, Tevis helped make Palm Desert, outside Palm Springs, the polo capital of the Western world.

In 1954 he established the Tevis Cup, an award still given annually to the winner of a 100-mile race from Tahoe County to Auburn.

The Tevis Land and Livestock Co. once owned more that 4,000 acres in Marin, including the “Lakes” ranch, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area.

Tevis’ wife, Wrenn, died in 1977.

He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Tevis Haggin of Santa Barbara, and four grandchildren.

Funeral was held today at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
