Anthony "Babe" Milani
Born April 22, 1920 in Sausalito to Joseph and Mary Milani, natives of Lonate Pozzolo, Italy, he passed quietly at home after a brief illness on January 27, 2002 in the company of his family. He was 81 years old.
Preceded in death by brothers Frank and Louis Milani, devoted husband of Edith Milani for 57 years, beloved father of Charlene, Judith and James, grandfather of Stephanie, Jason and Tony and great- grandfather to Chase, Riely, Cole, Jacob and Shae.
He was a graduate of San Rafael High School class of 1938 where he was captain of the football team and where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Edith. He served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Member of the 432nd Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion under the famed 5th Army of Gen. Mark W. Clark, he was awarded the Soldier's Medal for Valor for saving the life of a drowning fellow soldier while serving at Bizerte, Tunisia in 1942. He was active in the Mediterranean theater of war and took part in the invasions of Africa, Sicily and Italy.
A lifetime resident of San Rafael, he began his career as a mechanic for family owned Rafael Motors, then moved to Bianco Motors of San Rafael where he was to hold the titles of Service Manager and Sales Manager, for which he was awarded Top Salesman recognition numerous times throughout 30-plus year career.
He was a member of the Elks Club of San Rafael, Native Sons of the Golden West, American Legion, Marin Rod & Gun Club and Gruppo Lonatese.
After his retirement he took great joy in pursuing his love of gardening, gourmet cooking, football as a fan of the SF 49ers, and especially in the visits of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A private Funeral Mass was celebrated on January 30th at the St. Raphael's Chapel in San Rafael followed by same-day interment at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in San Rafael. He will be missed greatly, but remembered with greatest love by all. Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
