Car Smashup Kills Hamilton Airman

An airman from Hamilton (illegible) another injured early today when their car went off Lucas Valley road, apparently overturned and came to rest 105 feet below the road.

Dead is A2/c Leland G. Dickinson, 21, attached to the 78th Hospital-Dental Clinic at Hamilton. Dickinson was a passenger in a car driven by A1/c Leo G. Davis, 23, 78th Base Hospital Unit. Davis is being treated at the air base hospital.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. Davis and Dickinson were en route back to the base after a squadron party at Rancho Nicasio. The car apparently went out of control at the top of Big Rock Ridge on the Lucas Valley road, and went off the road on the left (north) side, coming to rest at a point 145 feet away and 105 feet below the road.

Both men were apparently thrown from the vehicle. Davis lay unconscious for about an hour. When he recovered consciousness, he found that Dickinson was dead.

Davis crawled up the bank to the road and was picked up by a passing motorist and taken to a nearby ranch. He telephoned to the CHP at 2:58 a.m., and an ambulance summoned by CHP officers took him to the Hamilton hospital.

Investigation by CHP officers Steve Liswood and John Halligan was still under way this morning. Dickinson’s death brought to five the number of highway fatalities in Marin this year. ………….
