John Allen Ruef
Passed away peacefully in his home at 34 Meadow Drive in Mill Valley on Friday, August 2, 2002. John was born on January 11, 1943 at Ross Hospital in Ross, California. He attended the one room schoolhouse at McNear's Brickyard, where Mrs. Black taught him, until his family moved back to Mill Valley. Upon his family's return to Mill Valley, John attended Alto School, Edna Maguire School and graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1960. After graduation, John enlisted in the Army and was active until 1966 when he was honorably discharged. After returning home from the Army, John joined the Alto Volunteer Fire Department, worked for the Veterans' Administration and volunteered with alcohol and addiction recovery patients. At the time of his death, John had been clean and sober for 22 years. John loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting the Oregon coast and the Grand Teton Mountains. Reading, gardening, Giants baseball, Forty-Niner football and British comedies were some of his favorite pastimes. John will be deeply missed by his daughter Kathryn Ellen Ruef of Maud, Oklahoma, stepdaughter Shelley Byrd of Maud, Oklahoma, sister Beverly Ann Ritsch of Chester, California, brother David Paul Ruef of Oakland, California, niece Tami Jeanne Fetter of Mill Valley, California, mother Jeanne Marchisio McVae of Mill Valley, uncle David Robert Justice of Mill Valley, California and many other family and friends. At his request, there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to The Redwood Gospel Mission, The American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
