James M. Stephenson

James M. Stephenson died peacefully at his home in Mill Valley on October 25th 2002 from heart failure. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 4, 1920 and came with his family to San Francisco as a young child. Jim attended Lowell High School in San Francisco where he met his wife, Patricia Kurtz. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in May of this year. He is survived by his son Jim and daughter-in-law Joan Murray of Mill Valley, daughter Lynne Fabricant and son-in-law Rene Fabricant of Eugene, Oregon, and five adored grandchildren. His son Mark preceded him in death. Jim served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and the Naval Reserve during the Korean War. After WWII he returned to school on the GI Bill and graduated from Golden Gate University. He retired from middle management with PG&E after 38 years, then became proficient in personal property appraising. Jim served on the Mill Valley Parks and Recreation board and was chairman in 1974-75. He was a long time member of The Family in San Francisco and the Mill Valley Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed tennis and was a long time member of the Mill Valley Tennis Club where he served as president in 1956 and on the board of directors again when the original building was replaced. He was an honorary lifetime member of The Olympic Club in San Francisco where he served as rugby commissioner and wrote for the Olympian magazine. He was an avid runner before the practice was common. He occasionally ran from his home in Mill Valley to the Olympic Club on Post Street where he'd change into his financial district attire for work. He finished five marathons, the last at age 70, and loved to run the Dipsea Race. Friends are invited to a Memorial Service at the Community Church of Mill Valley, 8 Olive Street on November 16 at 3PM. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers tributes to the Community Church of Mill Valley, the American Red Cross Bay Area Disaster Relief Fund, or Hospice of Marin.
