Emil Joseph Bettega

A resident of El Cerrito, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the age of 86. Emil was the loving husband of predeceased Elsie Jane Bettega. Emil was born in Corte Madera on September 25, 1915 to parents Stephano and Antoinette Bettega of Colico, Italy. He grew up in Kentfield with his brother David and sister Antoinette, and later raised his own family in El Cerrito. Emil was deeply involved in the community as a parent, employer and citizen. A Carpenter by trade, Emil was recently honored as a 60-Year Member of San Francisco's Local 22. He worked for the Fred J. Early Company for many years. He worked on innumerable projects, which included construction work at Alcatraz. Later, he was a founder and part owner of C. Norman Peterson Contractors of Berkeley. The company was later sold to Dillingham Construction Company, where he worked late into his life as a Consultant. Emil was a longtime member of both the Berkeley Breakfast Club and the El Cerrito Lions Club. In life, one will not come across a person of higher integrity and honesty. Throughout his life he enabled the lives and careers of countless others. He loved his wife and family above all. In 1970 he built a home on the north shore of Lake Tahoe where he loved to spend time. Emil was the father of Beverly Ipsen of Clayton, recently deceased, Carole Ransome of Moraga and Michael Bettega of Clovis. He had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service held at St. Ambrose Church in Berkeley (1145 Gilman ph: 510-525-2620) at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2002.
