J. G. DEVINE

Requiem mass for retired Brig. Gen. James G. Devine of San Rafael will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Chapel of Our Lady in the Presidio of San Francisco.

Devine, who was 77, died unexpectedly Monday at his home at 68 Peacock Drive.

He was born in San Francisco, the son of a pioneer California family. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the California National Guard in 1915.

He made a career in the Army for 37 years, retiring in 1954.

He served overseas in World War I and again in World War II, when he was assigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations, and was an antiaircraft brigade commander during the Korean War.

At the time of his retirement he was head of the Western Army Antiaircraft Command at Fort Baker.

Devine and his wife, Lorene, have lived in Marin since 1954, making their home in the Peacock Gap area of San Rafael the past 10 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James H. Devine of Southern California, three grandchildren and a brother, John Devine of Sacramento.

Burial will be in the family plot at Green Lawn Cemetery, Colma.
