EDWARD CALA
Food chain founder

Services for Edward Cala, father of former Fairfax Council member JoHanna Willmann, were held yesterday at Serra Mortuary in Daly City.

Mr. Cala, one of seven brothers who founded the Cala Foods store chain, died at his home in San Francisco. He was 79.

He was born in Livonia, N.Y., and moved to California with his brothers to found the first Cala Foods store in San Francisco.

Mr. Cala retired as vice president in charge of personnel and labor relations in 1988, when Cala Foods was acquired by the Claremont-based Yucaipa Capital Group.

He served on the board of trustees of Islam Temple and t he board of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. He was a member of the Paul Revere Chapter of the Masonic Blue Lodge, the California Commandery K.T., and the Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 4.

Mr. Cala is also survived by his wife, Marjorie Cala of San Francisco; two other daughters, Linda Criswell of Van Nuys and Barbara Williams of Helena, Mont.; a sister, Frances Warner; two brothers, Frank and Thomas Cala; and nine grandchildren.
