Ex-College Coach Dies in Sebastopol
Louis Harold (Scoop) Carlson, former head coach and director of athletics at College of Marin, died Saturday at his home in Sebastopol following a heart attack. He was born in Oregon 52 years ago.
From 1931 until 1941, Carlson was head coach at College of Marin. At the time of his death, he had completed nearly a year of part time teaching at Analy High School in Sebastopol.
His wife, Mrs. Viola Carlson, who survives him, teaches sewing in the adult education program at College of Marin.
Carlson joined the Navy as an officer at the outbreak of World War II.
After the war, he became Junior Red Cross director for the Pacific Area, which includes eight western states and Alaska.
In 1953 he resigned and purchased a boysenberry farm near Sebastopol but heart trouble reduced his farm activities. He made his home in Marin until 1953.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Harold Carlson of San Francisco, and a daughter, Mary Lou Carlson who is training to be a nurse.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Chapel of the O'Leary Funeral Home, 151 Bodega avenue, Sebastopol.
