BAIN, Hilliard Gibbs, Jr. 'Tim' -- Entered into rest in San Carlos on November 7, 2001, at the age of 82. He was born on October 9, 1919, to Hilliard G. Bain and Claire Pollard Bain in Berkeley, California. He spent many happy years of his childhood in Seattle, WA, where he and his sister, Kay, swam in Lake Washington, played kick the can with neighborhood children, and played in their tree-house. His family later moved to San Mateo, where he attended San Mateo High School, participating in football and track and field. At 6'3 tall, he was known as ''Bain the Crane''. After high school he attended the University of California in Berkeley where he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and was an oarsman on the Cal Crew. He served his country during World War II, first as a civilian in the Army Corps of Engineers building air fields in the South Pacific, and later as an officer in the United States Navy. After the war, he worked for Link Belt Company, later part of FMC Corporation, from 1946 until his retirement in 1983, as a Regional Sales Manager. He was married for 19 years to his beloved wife, Harriet McDowell Bain; was a dear brother to Katherine Murray of Carmichael; a cherished father of three children, Suzanne Cummings of San Luis Obispo, Thomas Bain of Wisconsin, and Carolyn Anne Sedillo of Sunnyvale; two step-children, Buddy McDowell of Georgia, and Carolyn Strausser of Marin County; and devoted grandfather of seven grandchildren, Katie and Daniel Bain, John and Christopher Cummings, and Rebecca, Sophia and Samuel Sedillo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, and mother of his children, Shirley Springhorn Bain, who died in 1975. They had been married for 27 years. He also will be missed by his two sons-in-law, Greig Cummings and Rafael Sedillo; his daughter-in-law Patricia Bain; and his stepson-in-law Ed Strausser; and many other friends and relatives. He will be greatly missed! He loved his family and friends, camping and hiking, and was a life-long Giants and 49ers fan. Hilliard (Tim) was a lifetime Episcopalian, and a member of The Church of the Epiphany in San Carlos for the past 20 years. He was a leader for several years in the ''SIRS'' (Sons in Retirement) Club of San Mateo County. A Memorial Service will be held at The Church of the Epiphany, 1839 Arroyo Ave., San Carlos, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, Rev. Bruce Freeman officiating.
