A 25
CATON, Nancy E. -- Of San Francisco, aged 76, died on November 1, 2001, after a long illness. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 4, 1924, but had lived in San Francisco for many years. Nancy attended Queen's College in Charlotte before moving to Germany following World War II. In addition to operating an employment agency in Minneapolis, she also worked as an airline stewardess before marrying Mark Lee Caton II in 1954. The couple lived in San Francisco until the time of Mr. Caton's death in 1977. Remaining in the city after that time, Nancy Caton was active on the Women's Board of the Presbyterian Medical Center, orchestrating the revival of its annual debutante ball in the late 1970s. The annual event raises money for research at PMC. She also worked for the American Conservatory Theater and the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and was a tireless volunteer for a number of cultural organizations. By many she will be remembered for her passion for the decorative arts, an interest that led to her association with several San Francisco auction houses for many years. Nancy Caton is survived by her brothers Harrison Hood of San Rafael and Robert B. Hood of Falls Church, Virginia; her daughter Nancy Elizabeth and her husband John McGuire of Oakland; her daughter Mary Anne Caton and her husband Kevin Murphy of Staten Island, New York, and Brooksville, Maine, and their daughter Lilla Haley Caton; two nieces, and four nephews. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 11th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to to a fund to endow a lecture in American Silver History at the American Decorative Arts Forum of Northern California, an affiliate of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Palace of the Legion of Honor, 100 34th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94121, or to the Nancy E.
