R. M. CANTWELL

Richard M. Cantwell, 72, chairman of the Inverness Public Utilities District and long time resident of Marin County, died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness.

Cantwell, a retired seaman, had been a resident of Inverness for the past 16 years. He came to Sausalito in 1901 with his father, the late Navy Capt. John Cantwell.

Richard Cantwell first went to sea when he was 14. He served in the Navy during World War I and was a retired lieutenant in the Navy Reserve.

During World War II Cantwell was an executive for the United States Maritime Commission in San Francisco. At the war’s conclusion he retired to Sausalito, and subsequently moved to Inverness.

Cantwell is survived by his wife, Ruth B. Cantwell, and a son, Burnham of the family home, and a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Sixta of Tahoe Valley.

Funeral services will be private. The family requests that tributes be contributions to the Crippled Children’s Hospital in San Francisco or to the Heart Fund.
