JACK SMITH
Funeral services will be held at the Presidio in San Francisco Monday morning for Lt. Cmdr. Jack E. Smith, 39, of San Rafael, who died in a jet plane that crashed into San Francisco Bay a week ago.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady’s Chapel in the Presidio. Burial will be at the Presidio National Cemetery. Rosary is scheduled for 8 p.m. tomorrow at Keaton’s San Rafael.
Smith’s body was recovered from the bay Thursday.
Smith’s companion Lt. Cmdr. Theodore W. Martin of San Lorenzo parachuted from t he falling plane into the bay and survived.
Smith was a native of Sioux City, Iowa and a graduate of the University of San Francisco. He entered the Navy at the outbreak of World War II and served on the East Coast for its duration. He was released from active duty in 1946, but remained in the active Reserve.
He had been a pilot for 19 years, 15 years as a jet pilot. At the time of his death he was an architectural representative for the W. P. Fuller Co., paint manufacturer, San Francisco.
Smith was vice president of the Holy Names Society of Blessed Sacrament Church. He lived with his wife Helen, and a daughter, Penelope, at 141 Golden Hinde Boulevard. He had been a resident of Marin since 1953.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Leonore Geary of Pacifica; Mrs. Betty Smith of Tiburon, and Mrs. Virginia Frombertz of Las Vegas
