Bodies Of Fliers In Crash Here Go East

Bodies of two Air Force reserve pilots killed in the crash of an AT-6 training place New Year’s Day will be sent to Wichita, Kans., tomorrow, Hamilton Field authorities disclosed today.

The fliers, whose bodies were recovered from the aircraft in the mud flats of San Pablo bay over the weekend, were identified as 2nd Lt. Donald R. Bradley, 23, and 1st Lt. Howard A. Thiry, 23, both of Wichita.

Salvage operations of Air Force and Navy crews extended for 72 hours before the body of Bradley was removed from the wreckage Saturday, Thiry’s body was removed late yesterday afternoon. Crews were forced to break the fuselage of the mud-laden craft into two pieces in order to extract it from the mud.

The ill-fated craft had sunk in from 15 to 20 feet of mud. Recovery attempts were married by shallow water and the change of tides.

Both men were single. The bodies were at the Guy W. Jenness & Co. mortuary today.
