William Toner, Pioneer Railroadman, Dies

Wiliam Toner, one of the best known of the old time railroad men in the North Bay counties, passed away at his home on Fourth street here early Monday morning after an illness covering a number of years.

Familiarly known at “Bill,” the deceased followed railroading for many years as a conductor on the old North Pacific Coast Railroad. More than a decade ago he severed his connection with the road and engaged in the saloon business in Santa Rosa, where his popularity and goodfellowship soon gained him a lucrative patronage. He next opened a place in Tiburon, conducting that for some time, and then removed to San Rafael to take charge of the place now known as Schneider’s Gardens. Subsequently he opened the business place on Fourth street, of which he was the proprietor until shortly before his death.

The deceased numbered many among his friends, both in railroad and other circles. Owing to his illness he had been unable for more than a year to attend strictly to business. He will be missed as a familiar figure on Fourth street.

The funeral was held at 8:30 Wednesday morning from the residence on Fourth street, preceding the celebration of a requiem mass said at St. Raphael’s church. Interment was made in Mount Olivet cemetery.

He was the husband of Mrs. Nellie Toner, and the brother of Mrs. P. Hansen of Ingleside, Mrs. E. Tilgner of Oakland, Mrs. C. Peckinbagh of Fresno, and Mrs. H. Steenson of San Francisco.

He was born in Lancaster, Pa., 57 years ago and was a member of San Rafael Aerie No. 256, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
