Martha Allison, Pioneer of Marin County, Dies
Mrs. Martha Allison, who was born in San Francisco in January, 1848, and who resided in Marin county for 80 years of her span of 85, died early this morning at her home on “D” street.
Mrs. Allison was a daughter of Benjamin R. Buckelew, who owned a huge acreage in Marin county, including San Quentin, Kentfield and Ross.
It was 20 acres of the Buckelew land at San Quentin Point which the state purchased in 1852 for the state prison. For this land the state paid $10,000. Prior to 1852 state prisoners were kept on a prison boat anchored off Vallejo.
Deceased is survived by three grandchildren, with whom she made her home – Miss Evelyn Tilson, teacher in the San Rafael schools; Miss Laverne Welch and Arthur Tilson.
