Geo. R. Kaufman Died This Afternoon
George R. Kaufman, for twenty-five years a resident of this city, died this afternoon at his home on Jessup street, following an illness of over nine weeks, during which time he has been constantly under the care of physicians and nurses.
Up to last Friday, Mr. Kaufman’s condition was not alarming, but at this time an unexpected heart condition developed, and the patient sank rapidly, and attending physicians and immediate relatives gave up the last thread of hope that the sick man might recover.
When the end came, Mrs. Kaufman and other near relatives were at the bedside.
Mr. Kaufman was a high type of citizen, and intimate conversation with him brought out that high ideal of right, justice and fair dealing which were predominate in his mind. Kaufman took an unusual interest in civic and political affairs of the community and the state, and previous to the primary election carried a petition for one of the candidates for Governor. Four years ago he was a candidate for County Tax Collector, and polled a substantial vote.
Before coming to this city about twenty-five years ago Kaufman was employed as an accountant with the Spring Valley Water Company for 8 years.
Up to a few years ago, he was considered one of the best musicians in the county, excelling in the piano, but a stroke of paralysis deprived him of the use of one arm, and he sought other vocations not to his liking. But through it all he maintained a cheerful disposition and was always a pleasant and interesting companion.
He was the husband of Marion Kaufman, father of George Robert Kaufamn Jr., aged 10, and son of Mrs. Margaret Kaufman and brother of Mrs. James S. Hawkins and Fred E. Kaufman. He was born in San Francisco.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral Saturday, October 16, at 9 a.m. from St. Raphael’s church where a requiem high mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul. Friends may call at Sawyer & Co.
