Mt. Tam Soldier Dies After Being Struck On Highway
Willis F. Jimmucum, 22-year-old Mount Tamalpais soldier struck by a car as he walked on the Highway 101 freeway south of San Rafael Sunday night, died just 24 hours later in Marin General Hospital last night without regaining consciousness.
His was the 19th Marin County traffic death of 1962, compared with 11 at this time last year.
No blame was attached by the California Highway Patrol to the driver of the southbound car which struck Jimmucum. Calvin Glenn Looseley of 38 Caledonia Street, Sausalito, said he glimpsed the victim only as the car hit him at 10:20 p.m. near the foot of the California Park Bridge.
Jimmucum was pronounced in critical condition on his arrival by ambulance at Marin General Hospital, and was to have been transferred to Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco had he rallied sufficiently.
He was a member of Headquarters Battery of the 40th Artillery Brigade, but was stationed at the Mill Valley Radar Station on Mount Tamalpais.
Jimmucum, a private, lived in Everett, Wash., before entering the Army a few months ago. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Gilbert DeYoung of Everett.
A memorial service will be held for Jimmucum tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Fort Scott Chapel. Funeral arrangements are pending in Everett.
