JOHN MURPHY
John Murphy, a resident of Mill Valley, died Monday at a local hospital after an unexpected illness. A native of Boston, Mass., he was 57.
He moved to Marin County in 1956 and worked as a manufacturer’s representative for marine hardware. He was a member of the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.
Before coming to Marin County, he worked as a reporter for the New York Times. He also worked on papers in Colorado, Texas and Montana. He graduated from Boston University with a degree in journalism.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as navigator on B-17 bombers over Europe. He was the recipient of the distinguished flying cross.
An active sailor, he participated in numerous San Francisco Bay races and in two San Francisco to Hawaii races. While he didn’t own a sailboat, he was a crew member for numerous club skippers.
He was also active in the Marin Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Murphy of Mill Valley; and a son, Roger G. H. Murphy of Mill Valley.
A private funeral service at sea is being planned by the yacht club.
The family wishes that any memorial donations be made to the John Murphy Memorial Fund, care of the Bank of Marin. That money would go toward giving young people a chance to sail.
