RUTH S. CLOSE

A private funeral will be held for Ruth Seymour Close of Mill Valley, the founder of the Tamalpais High School library.

Mrs. Close, 83, died Monday at home after a long illness.

She was born in San Francisco. Her family moved to Mill Valley in 1901.

She was the valedictorian of the first four-year graduating class of Tamalpais High School. In 1917 she received a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. The next year she received a graduate degree in library science in Sacramento.

Mrs. Close worked as the librarian for Letterman Hospital in San Francisco during World War I. She returned to Tamalpais High School to establish its library. She worked there until retiring in 1951.

She is survived by her husband, W. Harry Close of Mill Valley, two brothers, Kent O. Seymour of Mill Valley and Elliot W. Seymour of Greenbrae, and a sister, Elizabeth Seymour Crosley of Kingsport, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements are by Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel, Mill Valley.
