Mary Burdell Lichtenberg Succumbs
Funeral services were held this morning for Mrs. Mary Burdell Lichtenberg, colorful figure among Marin County’s pioneer families, who died last Saturday after a stroke. A low Requiem Mass was celebrated this morning at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church at Novato.
Mrs. Lichtenberg’s home, on a private road north of Novato, is a showplace. The gray stone mansion is said to be filled with priceless antiques. The estate includes a swimming pool and extensive gardens. The Burdell property, which Mrs. Lichtenberg owned, once included the historic Rancho Olompali in North Marin and other vast ranchlands, some of which stretched to the Pacific coast.
Mrs. Lichtenberg’s father was Dr. Galen Burdell, a San Francisco dentist who married the daughter of James Black for whom Black Point was named. Burdell Mountain, a railroad station and a one-room schoolhouse on Novato boulevard today bear her family’s name.
Mrs. Lichtenberg’s late brother, James Burdell, married the daughter of another North Marin pioneer, Josephine Sweetser, who today lives in Petaluma.
Mrs. Lichtenberg’s only living relative is Miss Beverly Porter of Petaluma, a granddaughter. Mrs. Lichtenberg’s only daughters, Kathleen Porter, died while young.
Sorenson funeral home of Petaluma handled funeral arrangements. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Mausoleum in Colma at a later date.
