J. W. Bass Succumbs in Boat

James William Bass, 45, of China Camp, collapsed and died in a boat off China Camp at 10:30 a.m. yesterday while attempting to retrieve another boat.

Witness on the shore saw Bass fall in the boat and called authorities. He was picked up by the Coast Guard and taken to the Loch Lomond Marina, where he was pronounced dead.

A native of Spring Hope, N.C., Bass came to Marin County eight years ago after retiring from a 20-year career in the Navy.

Since that time, he had worked at Mare Island Ship Yard in Vallejo as a welder.

Surviving are his wife, Georgette Bass of China Camp, a son, Samuel Bass of Tiburon, his mother, Mrs. Minnie P. Bass of Spring Hope, N.C., two brothers, S. Isaac Bass of Spring Hope and Samuel Walter Bass of Mountain View, and two sisters, Mrs. Annie P. Wood of Portsmouth, Va., and Mrs. Josephine Stancil of Richmond, Va.

He was a member of Mount Tamalpais Branch 254, Fleet Reserve Assn.

Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Harry M. Williams Mortuary, San Rafael. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.
