JOSEPH WITHEROW
Retired Navy Captain

Joseph Francis Witherow, a Mill Valley resident, died Nov. 9 at Marin General Hospital of pneumonia. He was 89.

Born in San Francisco, Mr. Witherow also lived in Greenbrae and attended Tamalpais High School. He attended Annapolis Naval Academy and achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1958 after 30 years. After his retirement, he started a second career teaching Spanish and coaching golf at Tamalpais High School.

He retired from teaching in 1976, but remained active in Community activities and continued to travel. He was deacon at The Church of Our Savior in Mill Valley and was active in SIRS #7.

He is survived by his daughter Deirdre Witherow of Sausalito and two grandchildren. His wife of 58 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Witherow, and daughter Sallie Springer died earlier.

Friends are invited to a Requiem Eucharist on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at The Church of Our Savior, 10 Old Mill in Mill Valley.
