GEORGE A. WORN
A memorial service was held Thursday in Los Gatos for George Austin Worn, 88, descendent of the family who founded the town of Ross.
Worn died last Saturday in a San Jose convalescent home after a lengthy illness.
He was the great-grandson of James Ross, who bought part of the San Quentin Rancho in 1857, establishing Ross Landing in order to ship lumber cut on the property.
One of Ross’ daughters, Annie, married George Worn , the grandfather of George Austin Worn.
The Worns inherited a portion of the original ranch, including the property which is now the Marin Art and Garden Center.
George A. Worn was born in Virginia City, Nev., but grew up in Marin County. The family later moved to Nevada and he graduated from Reno High School. After graduating from Cornell University, he worked as an engineer for Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co. and later for Lummus Construction Co. in New York. He participated in the construction of chemical plants in this country and Europe.
When he retired in 1955, Worn moved to Los Gatos, where he lived until becoming ill two years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of San Jose; two sons, Philip Ross Worn of Princeton, N.J., and Donald R. Worn of Los Gatos; one brother, Charles Worn of Pleasant Hill; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
