Mae Margaret Nettles Van Loan

Mae Margaret Nettles Van Loan, “Bo,” died Feb. 28 at her Mill Valley home. She was 57.

Born Jan. 1, 1945 to Robert Richards Nettles and Marjorie Deane Abraham Nettles of Baton Rouge, she graduated from that city’s Istrouma High School and later attended Louisiana State University.

After leaving college, she worked at Dunn and Bradstreet in San Francisco in 1965. She and Janice Link founded and operated a mobile restaurant in Berkeley, and in 1972 worked successfully to change the street vending laws of Berkeley.

She married Derek Van Loan nearly 30 years ago, and they built and lived aboard a schooner while she served as parish secretary for Christ Episcopal Church in Sausalito for several years.

For 14 years the Van Loans ran a home childcare service in Mill Valley, attended by over 100 children.

She survived her husband; their daughter Katrina; Mae Margaret’s sister Marjorie Dean Block of Louisiana; their uncle, Forrest Nettles of North Carolina; and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Tamalpais Methodist Church, 410 Sycamore, from 7 to 8 p.m. Afterward there will be a potluck reception at the Mill Valley Community Center.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to her daughter’s college fund; send to Katrina Van Loan, 186 Alamonte Blvd., Mill Valley.
