ALFONSO HAAPA

Funeral for Alfonso S. Haapa, 79, of Larkspur, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Russell and Gooch Mortuary, Mill Valley.

Haapa died Sunday in a local hospital following a brief illness.

A native of Brombarb (sic)Haapa, Finland, Haapa had lived in California and Marin County 57 years, residing at 10 La Rosa Way, Larkspur. He was a former caretaker for the Garden Valley Camp in Mill Valley and a veteran of World War I. Haapa was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50-year member of the American Legion, Mill Valley Post No. 284.

He is survived by three daughters, Sonia Pierce of San Rafael, Ingrid Diaz and Margaret Steinwascher and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. The family prefers contributions to a favorite charity.

A Death Notice in the same paper mentions his late wife Selma. He was the grandfather of Mrs. Merrill Evenson, Michael, Richard and Selina Pierce and Henry and Carmen Diaz, and Curt and James Steinwascher. He was a native of “Bromarb,” Finland.
