Frank Riede, Former SR Mayor, Dies In Hospital
Frank Riede, well-known San Rafael businessman and former mayor of the city, died today at a local hospital after a three-day illness. He was 77 years old.
A native of Germany, he had come to Marin county 59 years ago where he established Riede’s bakery, located on Fourth street, between B and C streets, San Rafael. He was the original business agent for the Studebaker automobile firm, operated by himself and the late Joseph Codoni. He retired from the business several years ago.
Active in civic enterprises and local organizations, he was a member of the city council from 1919 to 1923. He became mayor of San Rafael in 1935, serving for a two-year term. He was a member of San Rafael Lodge B.P.O.E., San Rafael Aerie of Eagles, Marin Lodge Odd Fellows and German Red Men, and was a well-known sportsman in Marin county.
He was the husband of the late Sophia H. Riede and the father of Harold F. Riede, former assistant district attorney and now a member of the law firm of Martinelli, Gardiner and Riede. In addition to his son, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Marcella J. Elliott and a brother, Jacob Riede of Escalon, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning from Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael, under the auspices of San Rafael Lodge, No. 1108, B.P.O.E. Interment will be at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
