2 Killed When Automobile Jams Into Novato Bridge

Two Bronx, New York, tourists were killed about 11 a.m. this morning as the car in which they were riding struck the Novato bridge near Highway 101 – Black Point cutoff junction.

Two other passengers in the car are in critical condition at the San Rafael General Hospital.

The dead are identified as Adolph Neufeld, 51, and Mrs. Mildred Herring, 50, both of the Bronx.

The injured are Mrs. Pauline Neufeld, wife of the dead man, and Isaac D. Herring, husband of the dead woman.

According to a witness, W. Ramsay, 107 Suffield Avenue, the car driven by Adolph Neufeld, a new model Buick, struck the cement abutment on the west side of the bridge as he attempted to pass a truck.

“I way the ‘death’ car pull to the left on the road and attempt to pass the truck up ahead. Apparently the driver of the car became startled when he way he couldn’t pass the truck before coming to the head of the bridge.

“He jammed on his brakes. He hit the concrete abutment in a dead bull’s eye.”

The width of the bridge was said to be about 20 feet.

The two men were reported to have been riding in the front seat of the car and the two women riding in back.

Though personal effects and identification papers were strewn about, it appeared the party had been on a vacation, according to the diary found in the car.

The driver of the truck was not held for questioning and was reported absolved of liability.
