A memorial for Fairfax Police Officer Ricardo Edmundo Alvillar will be held on Saturday March 23, 2002, 2:00pm at the Marin Art and Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Ross. Ric's family invites all who loved and respected him to join them. Ric died at home early the morning of March 10. Fairfax Police Officers and Ross Valley Firemen tried valiantly to save him. He was 48. Ric was born in Los Angeles May 14, 1953 to Edmundo and Esperanza Alvillar. When he was 13 the family moved to Sonoma County. Ric met his first wife and mother of their four children, Teresa Winburn, while working as night auditor at the Tiburon Lodge. Ric's career in law enforcement began in the City of Pacifica. In 1981, he began his 22-year tenure with the Fairfax Police Department where he was employed at the time of his death. Ric was the Department's Crime Prevention Officer, Domestic Violence Liaison Officer, Mental Health Liaison Officer, and Spanish interpreter for the Ross Valley. He was dedicated to the people of Fairfax and referred to them as "my brothers and sisters." Ric's passion was his family and his community. He had a brilliant mind and a wicked sense of humor. He was compassionate, gracious, kind, forgiving, reliable, generous, and loving. He was peaceful and a peace-maker. Ric loved music, playing guitar, cooking, fishing, hunting, bird-watching, and hiking. Ric was an expert marksman and life member of the National Rifle Association. He was proud that he'd never missed voting in an election since he was 18. Ric is survived by his wife Therese, sister Carmen Shultz of Lake County, daughters Esperanza Howard of Windsor, Gwyneviere Romero of Cotati, Rebecca Alvillar of Rio Nido, son Ricardo Jr. of Fairfax, stepson Neal Walter of Los Angeles, five grandchildren, his best friend, Aubrey Rattan of Burbank (aka Councilman Kenny or Tito the prison clown), and hundreds of other friends. Ric's brother Conrado and his parents preceded him in death. An account has been established at a local bank on behalf of Ric's children.
