Colin Menzies, Veteran Garden Expert, Dies At 84
Private funeral was held today for Colin Menzies Sr., 84, of Mill Valley who died Saturday at a local hospital after a long illness.
Burial was to be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.
Menzies, prior to his retirement 19 years ago, had worked as building superintendent and was in charge of rentals for the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco.
Born in San Francisco, he came to Mill Valley following the 1906 fire and earthquake. He made his home at 417 Magee Avenue.
Menzies worked with John McLaren and Alexander Rose doing the original landscaping for St. Francis Woods in San Francisco. He also did the planting around the Mill Valley Tennis Club.
He was a member of the Federal Reserve Bank Club, the Marin Art and Garden Club, and the Marin County Humane Society.
He is survived by his son, Colin Menzies Jr., of Mill Valley; a brother, Kenneth Menzies of Bolinas, and a sister, Agnes, of San Francisco. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
His wife, Alice R. Menzies, died about 10 years ago.
The family requests that tributes be contributions to the Marin Art and Garden Club or the Marin County Humane Society.
