THOMAS C. BOARDMAN
ATM developer

A family service will be held this afternoon for Thomas Charles Boardman, a former San Anselmo resident who helped develop the first automated bank teller machine. He died Jan. 8 in Novato of brain cancer at 51.

The Kenosha, Wisc. Native graduated from San Diego State University. Mr. Boardman worked for 25 years for IBM. During his career he helped develop the first ATM system and also IBM’s special services consulting group in Alaska.

Mr. Boardman, an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hiking, backpacking and skiing, settled in Homer, Alaska, where he achieved a lifelong dream of designing and building a cabin.

He was a member of the Sierra Club and volunteered for the Nordic Ski Patrol and Homer Independent Living Center.

Mr. Boardman is survived by his wife, Nancy Boardman of Homer; and two sons, Brian Thomas Boardman of Berkeley and Jason David Boardman of Oakland.

A family service is 3 p.m. today at Keaton’s Redwood Chapel of Marin in Novato.
