W. L. Thacher Dies At 87
Funeral services were held Wednesday for William Larnsd (sic) Thacher, 87, in Sierra Madre. He was the brother of the late Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Kent of Kentfield, Marin civic leader, who died in August, 1952.
In about 1931, after retiring as associate headmaster of Thatcher School for boys at Ojai, Thacher made his home for several years with his sister in Kentfield, then in recent years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Edith Thacher Dana at Sierra Madre.
A native of New Haven, Conn., he died Monday at Sierra Madre.
He graduated from Yale University in 1887, studied at Union Theological Seminary, was a YMCA secretary in New York, then pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Bradford, Pa.
In 1890, he visited Casa De Piedra, later named Thatcher School, at Ojai, the school started by his brother, Sherman, and attended the wedding of their sister, Elizabeth, with Kent.
In 1895, he moved to the school as associate headmaster and was very active in the school administration.
While at Yale, tennis was his chief extra-curricular interest, and he carried his enthusiasm for the game to Thacher, where it became the beginning of the Ojai Valley tennis tournament 55 years ago.
A memorial service will be held at the Thacher School at a later date.
