BRIAN JAY BUCKLEY
Novato student

Brian Jay Buckley of Novato, an honored graduate of Hill Middle School, died July 13 in a rafting accident on the Bitterroot River in Montana. He was 14.

Brian was born in San Francisco and grew up in Novato, where he attended school in the Novato Unified School District. He graduated from Hill Middle School last June with a 4.0 grade point average and was honored as an outstanding English student.

He enjoyed creative writing and kept a journal.

Brian was dedicated to his family, cousins and friends and had recently developed an interest in religion, family members said.

He excelled in sports, playing basketball, tennis, soccer and table tennis. He also enjoyed martial arts and track and field.

On his personal Web site, Brian said he wanted to become a professional basketball or soccer player, a millionaire, model, talk show host or professional skydiver. The site included his motto: “Life is short; make the most of it.”

Brian is survived by his mother, Merilee Rossi of Novato; his father, John Buckley of San Rafael; his sister, Sarah Buckley of Novato; two stepbrothers, Taylor and Silas Valentino of Novato; two stepsisters, Keeley and Dylan Valentino of Novato; grandparents, Jay and Marjorie Rossi of Portola Valley, John Buckley of Novato and Bobbie Buckley of San Rafael; and his great-grandmother, Violet Rossi of Los Gatos.

A memorial service and celebration of Brian’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church of Novato, 710 Wilson Ave., Novato.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Brian Jay Buckley Memorial Fund, Marin Community Foundation, 17 East Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur 94904.
