FRANCES STODDARD GRIFFIN
103 years old
Frances Stoddard Griffin, a 34-year resident of Marin, died July 14, two days before her 104th birthday.
As the oldest resident of The Tamalpais retirement community, she was known for her strong will and sharp humor.
Mrs. Griffin was born in Kearney, Neb.., in 1895 and grew up in Ogden, Utah, helping her parents by overseeing the education of her two brothers and three sisters.
After graduating from Ogden Business College, she married Loyal Griffin in 1919. The couple moved to Oakland during the Depression and lived there for 40 years.
Mrs. Griffin worked for excellence in education, and was twice elected president of the Westlake PTA.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Griffin had detailed knowledge of her family genealogy, which dated back to the Mayflower. She was always laughing and singing, said her family.
On her 100th birthday, four generations of her family celebrated Mrs. Griffin’s spirit, memory and vast repertoire of jokes, poems and songs. As at every family occasion, Mrs. Griffin recited “Here’s to Fair Knowledge,” the theme poem of Ogden High.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by two sons, Dr. Loyal Martin Griffin of Belvedere and Robert Stoddard of Coos Bay, Ore.; six grandchildren, Linda Frances Markgraf of Moraga, Anne Murray Lynn of Aptos, Carol Stoddard Griffin of San Rafael, Joan Martin Cordero of Healdsburg, Lori Anne Griffin of Los Angeles and Jim Lowell Griffin of Seattle; and eight great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at Golden Gate Military Cemetery.
