MOELLER, Nora, 93, of Marin County, passed away October 22, 2001. Neptune Society, Novato, 415-898-1868.

Passed away quietly on Monday, October 22, 2001, on the eve of her 94th birthday. Nora was a resident of Marin County for 56 years. Nora is survived by her loving daughters Carol Moeller Costa of Fairfax, CA, Sigrid Erika of Taos, NM, and Mira Moeller of Chico, CA. Her dear sister Marie Westwood, four grandchildren Pau, Tanya, Arjan and Karminder, and great-grandson Santino will also miss her. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family members who loved and admired her. She was preceded in death by three of her siblings, Robin, Ella, and Mark, her husband Eric, her son Dirk, and her grandson Ranko. She was born October 23, 1907 to Dutch parents Catharina and Iwan Serrurier in Altadena, CA, where she grew up. In the late 1920's she moved to Berkeley to attend the University of California, where she earned a B.A. in Fine Arts. She spent one year studying art in Paris before returning to Berkeley to marry Eric Moeller in 1929. She and Eric lived on Lagunitas Road in Ross with their three children from 1945 until Eric’s death in 1972. She then lived in San Anselmo until about one year ago. Nora had a lifelong passion for learning. She was an avid reader and lover of art, music and theater. She will be remembered for her strong interest in world events. For many years, beginning in the late 1950’s, she was active in the American Association for the United Nations, and served as Marin Chapter President. She organized a guest lecture by Eleanor Roosevelt for students in Marin. She later co-chaired the Marin committee which raised funds for UNICEF through the sale of greeting cards. Nora loved traveling, the outdoors, and exploring other cultures. She and Eric trekked on foot across British Columbia in 1933, a time when it was rare for a young woman to partake of such adventure. They also made numerous trips to Europe and Mexico and hosted several foreign exchange students in their Ross home. Well into her 80's, Nora welcomed travelers from around the world into her home. Nora cared passionately about protecting the environment. She recycled everything from envelopes to rainwater and at age 90 insisted on walking to the grocery store to prevent pollution. At age 50 she began to practice yoga daily and continued until very recently. Nora was very self-sufficient, hard-working and generous. She did most of her own property maintenance until her 90's and shared her cabin on the Mendocino coast with many friends and family for over 40 years. A memorial gathering is being planned. For information please call 530-891-6835 or e-mail rabrown@nevada.edu. In lieu of flowers Nora would have preferred that everyone make a charitable donation to one of her favorite organizations. The family suggests the Nature Conservancy or the League of Women Voters.
