Fatal Operation
Mrs. Burdell Dies Under the Surgeon's Knife
Her Death Occurred at Dr. Lane's Hospital in San Francisco
Mrs. Dr. Mary A. Burdell died at the Lane Hospital in San Francisco Jan. 23, 1900. She died a few minutes after passing under the surgeon's knife. Her two children, J.B. Burdell and Mrs. Mabel Coleman and Capt. J.M. Coleman were in San Francisco when she died.
A month's illness preceded Mrs. Burdell's death. About two weeks ago she was taken to San Francisco to undergo a critical operation.
Mrs. Burdell was one of the best known women of Central California. She was the real owner of the Petaluma Light and Power Company and of the 30,000 acre Burdell ranch in Marin County. One can travel from San Antonio Creek clear to Point Reyes and never leave the Burdell ranch. She also owned extensive timber interests in Humboldt County, San Rafael property and a number of lots in Petaluma.
Her annual income from the Burdell ranch alone was $30,000. She was the only daughter of Captain Black, one of the heaviest landowners in California, or even in the United States. Much of Captain Black's immense landed properties went to the Pacheco's.
The deceased was a widely traveled woman. She made the acquaintance of many people of note and often entertained celebrities of world-wide renown.
Those who knew Mrs. Burdell best will be deeply grieved to hear of her death. She was of a very generous nature, possessed a kind heart and extended timely aid to hundreds of poor people.
Surviving her are the husband, Dr. Burdell, and the son and daughter mentioned.
