CLARENCE C. KANE
Clarence C. Kane of Sausalito, a businessman who helped spread sourdough bread's popularity beyond the Bay Area, died at home on May 23 after a long illness. He was 85.
Born in Seattle on Nov. 30, 1915, Mr. Kane was the son of Samuel and Frieda Kane. He was a graduate of San Mateo High School and served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II.
Mr. Kane was an owner of several prominent San Francisco businesses, including Rosenberg Brothers, a leading fruit and nut distributor, as well as U.S. Leasing Corp., which pioneered the business of leasing airplanes, train cars and other equipment.
But it was as co-founder and director of S.F. Sourdough Bakeries Inc. that Mr. Kane was able to expose San Francisco cuisine to the rest of the world. According to his family, Mr. Kane began selling the Parisian brand of sourdough at the San Francisco Airport and eventually to more than 50 airports around the country.
Mr. Kane sold the bakery in 1982 after he established the Parisian brand and its famous red, white and blue logo.
Married to Maidie Oppenheimer Kane, Mr. Kane was an avid yachtsman and a member of the Sausalito and TransPacific Yacht Clubs, sailing throughout the world. He was also a longtime member of the Olympic Club.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.
Services will be private.
