JAMES R. SMITH
James R. Smith, of San Rafael, a retired postal worker and retired Coast Guard chief petty officer, died Wednesday at home after a long illness.
Smith, who worked for the Postal Service at San Francisco Airport, retired two years ago.
He had served in the Coast Guard for 23 years before retiring from the service about 20 years ago.
He was a native of Oakland and had been a longtime resident of San Rafael.
Surviving are his wife, Erna Smith of San Rafael; a daughter, Jeanne Odemar of Sacramento; and two brothers, Raymond Smith of San Rafael and Sidney Smith of San Diego.
There will be no service and his ashes will be scattered at sea.
