Katharine Eddy Botsford
A descendent of a distinguished family which opened up Michigan timberlands in the 1870s and 1880s and subsequently moved West, died November 2, 2001 at the age of 93 at Rafael Convalescent Hospital in Marin County. She had resided in Tiburon for 37 years. She was born October 3, 1908, in San Francisco, the daughter of Edwin M. and Nell Fisher Eddy, sister of Selwyn Eddy, II, deceased, granddaughter of Selwyn Eddy, first president of Pacific Lumber Company. Known to her friends as Kay, she was the widow of business executive Edward P. Botsford, who died in 1982. As a young woman, she summered in Michigan where her relatives included her uncle, William L. Clements, industrialist, alumnus and Regent of the University of Michigan, who endowed the university's rare books library and archive which bears his name. Mrs. Botsford met and married her husband while living in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. They lived in New York City before and during World War II and then moved to the Bay Area. For many years, Mrs. Botsford assisted the Louis Benoist family in several capacities when they owned Almaden Vineyards in Los Gatos. Later she was a familiar figure among San Francisco's Jackson Square antiques dealers. She is survived by two nephews, Selwyn Eddy, III of Novato and Jonathan Budd Eddy of North Carolina, grandnephew Jonathan Charles Eddy, two grandnieces, Heather Michele Eddy and Katherine Frances Eddy of North Carolina. Mrs. Botsford was an alumna of the Katherine Delmar Burke School. Donations in her memory may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., 350 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael, CA 94903, or the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 200 Pine St., #200, San Francisco, CA 94104.
