FRED SEARLS Jr.
Private funeral will be held for Fred Searls Jr., 80, internationally known metallurgist and mining executive. Burial will be in Nevada City, Nevada County.
Searls, father of Mrs. John True of Ross, died Monday at his San Francisco home following a two-month illness.
He retired last year as board chairman of Newmont Mining Corp. of New York. A 1909 graduate of the University of California, he had joined the firm in 1922.
Searls served on the Atomic Evaluation Commission, charged with making the atom work for peace, following World War II.
Other survivors are his wife, Gwynne Davis Searls, two sons and two other daughters.
